For the last 12 years I have worked as a personal trainer in both England and Australia and have always been a keen sportsman.

Up until the age of 21 I played at a high level of sports including Semi-professional football for Lewes FC and cricket for Sussex CCC academy until I had surgery after I ruptured ligaments in my knee in 2007 which put an end to my playing days.

During my time as a personal trainer I started out concentrating on clients aesthetic goals without a thought about how they move or if they should be doing a certain type of exercise.  It wasn’t until I injured my knee and went through my own rehabilitation programme that I became more interested in corrective exercise.  Although this has been successful in alleviating some clients pain, it was like treating the symptom and not the cause of the problem with pain often resurfacing.

Trauma can cause obvious movement problems and pain can alter movement, but our movement often remains altered even after the pain is resolved. Movement compensation is a natural behaviour but even after our pain has disappeared we can be set in new unfavourable movement patterns which can lead to further pain and injury in the future. This is what most exercise rehabilitation does not consider.

This has lead me to my role today in movement rehabilitation.  I herniated my L5-S1 disc in my back and had severe sciatic pain due to being unaware of my dysfunctional movement.  I could barely walk.  I went through the IDD Therapy treatment programme and movement rehabilitation with Steve and the team here at SBPC and the process has been a success.

The movement rehabilitation opened my eyes and mind to movement as a whole body approach and not just a part of the body.  After experiencing the results and effectiveness of the process first hand I knew I wanted to be a part of the success here at the clinic.
