Work related injuries (Repetitive Strain Injuries)
This group of conditions is increasing. Recently 2% of all workers in the UK have reported an RSI and every day six people leave their jobs because of this. Often referred to as work-related upper limb disorders (WRULDs) they commonly manifest as numbness, tingling, sharp pain, dull ache, weakness, loss of grip and restricted movement of the limbs. However RSI can also affect the neck, shoulders, back and lower limbs.

In most RSIs there is a range of variables that contribute to the injury which range from the physical demands of the work to the way in which work is organised and the work environment RSI is not a recognised medical condition and does not lend itself to medical diagnosis and treatment. However due to the functional nature of this condition, osteopathic treatment offers a much more effective solution.

Problems occur when abnormal stresses and strains caused by improper work activities are not recognised or managed properly and the condition builds over time with continued overuse. This leads to fatigue and then damage of muscle tissue and inflammatory changes in the tendons, which can be very painful. Osteopaths have an advanced knowledge of the body’s structure and function and can
identify areas of increased loading, treat and manage them properly. Together with a good rehabilitation programme, we can ensure a swift and successful return to work.

At the clinic we also have practitioners trained in ergonomics, to give advice on working environments. We like to work closely with your employer and can visit your place of work to undertake a detailed workplace assessment to reduce the risk of a work-related disorder.
