Sciatica mostly happens when a disc in the low back bulges and traps the nerve into the leg. It can be one of the most painful conditions that you can suffer from, having a massive impact on life. This was the case for Sharon, a 38 year old internal auditor from Eastbourne. She had suffered with awful sciatic pain for several months and her life was miserable.
“I had terrible pain from the bottom of my lower back all down my right leg. There didn’t seem to be any pattern to what made the pain better or worse so it became very hard to manage. Sitting down was agony at times, at other times it wasn’t too bad, but there was always some pain there no matter what I did. I had to stop running (one of my favourite forms of exercise) as it exacerbated the pain significantly and I couldn’t play with the kids as much as it was just too painful.”
She saw a consultant who told her to prepare herself for up to 6 months of physiotherapy and would need to take painkillers for the duration.
“That just wasn’t acceptable to me, I couldn’t bear the thought of having the pain for that long.”
So, Sharon did a bit of research and found the Sussex Back Pain Clinic and the IDD Therapy that they were using to successfully treat slipped discs and sciatica. She booked an initial assessment, found that she would be a good candidate for this treatment and so started a 6 week course of mechanical spinal decompression to solve her problem.
“I really liked the fact that its non-invasive, no medicine involved, but is based purely on the physiology and mechanics of the body essentially helping the body to learn how to heal itself the right way. The IDD itself honestly doesn’t hurt one bit, it might feel a bit weird at first, but you very quickly get used to it and the team are incredibly supportive and look after you very well throughout.
Honestly, I think the morning after my very first treatment – I had a bit less pain when I first woke up and got out of bed, this had always been a particularly painful activity for me for the last four or five months so the difference was quite noticeable.”
Sharon responded extremely well to treatment, following which she said:
“For the first time in months, I don’t have any pain!! When I started treatment, everything I did hurt, every day I was in pain and it took over my life, impacting both work and family time. Now, I am so much happier, I can actually get down on the floor again to play with my two young sons which I had hugely missed out on before I started treatment because it was just too painful. I went from being in a lot of pain every single day to having no pain at all in less than 5 weeks, that’s pretty amazing in my book!”
The SBPC team really know their stuff, and together they have given me my life back, something which I would not have believed could be done in such a short space of time”
