Sciatica, most commonly caused by a bulging disc in the lower back pinching the sciatic nerve, can lead to excruciating pain, altering the course of one’s life. This was the reality for Sharon, a 38-year-old internal auditor from Eastbourne, who grappled with intense sciatic pain for several months.
“I had terrible pain from the bottom of my lower back all down my right leg. There didn’t seem to be any pattern to what made the pain better or worse so it became very hard to manage. Sitting down was agony at times, at other times it wasn’t too bad, but there was always some pain there no matter what I did. I had to stop running (one of my favourite forms of exercise) as it exacerbated the pain significantly and I couldn’t play with the kids as much as it was just too painful” she recalls.
She was advised to brace herself for six months of physiotherapy and painkillers. But Sharon couldn’t bear the thought of enduring the pain for that long. She needed a better solution.
Research led her to the Sussex Back Pain Clinic and their use of IDD Therapy for treating slipped discs and sciatica. After an initial assessment confirmed her eligibility for the treatment, she embarked on a six-week journey of mechanical spinal decompression to solve her problem.
“I really liked the fact that its non-invasive, no medicine involved, but is based purely on the physiology and mechanics of the body essentially helping the body to learn how to heal itself the right way. The IDD itself honestly doesn’t hurt one bit, it might feel a bit weird at first, but you very quickly get used to it and the team are incredibly supportive and look after you very well throughout” Sharon says about her initial impressions of the treatment.
Her journey with IDD Therapy was a resounding success, with noticeable improvements from the get-go, “Honestly, I think the morning after my very first treatment – I had a bit less pain when I first woke up and got out of bed, this had always been a particularly painful activity for me for the last four or five months so the difference was quite noticeable.”
Sharon’s post-treatment life was a stark contrast to her earlier pain-riddled days. “For the first time in months, I don’t have any pain!! When I started treatment, everything I did hurt, every day I was in pain and it took over my life, impacting both work and family time. Now, I am so much happier, I can actually get down on the floor again to play with my two young sons which I had hugely missed out on before I started treatment because it was just too painful. I went from being in a lot of pain every single day to having no pain at all in less than 5 weeks, that’s pretty amazing in my book!” she celebrates.
“The SBPC team really know their stuff, and together they have given me my life back, something which I would not have believed could be done in such a short space of time,” she appreciates.
Sharing her life-changing experience, Sharon’s story serves as a reminder that debilitating sciatica isn’t a life sentence. In less than 5 weeks, she went from excruciating daily sciatica to no pain at all – a pretty amazing transformation, indeed!
